Under Pressure (In a Good Way): The Truth About Hyperbaric Oxygen

You've probably seen it on social media: somebody lying in a big capsule, claiming it cured everything from wrinkles to brain fog. So is hyperbaric oxygen a miracle tube, or a very expensive nap?

My Friends, the answer is somewhere in between, and you deserve the honest version.

What it actually is

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) means relaxing in a pressurized chamber. Under pressure, your lungs take in more oxygen, and more of it dissolves into your blood plasma. That's real physics, not marketing. Ours is a hard-shell chamber that goes to 1.5 atmospheres, 50% more than the air pressure you're sitting in right now and more than the soft, inflatable "mild" chambers you see online. Inside, you breathe concentrated oxygen whichever way is most comfortable for you: a mask, a nasal cannula, or just the tube resting near your face. (Fair warning from your friendly neighborhood nerd: the mask delivers the most oxygen. Getting comfortable delivers the most relaxation!)

Where the research is strong

Hospital hyperbaric centers use high-pressure chambers, at two to three times normal air pressure, for serious problems. These include carbon monoxide poisoning, decompression sickness in divers, stubborn wounds like diabetic foot ulcers, and tissue damaged by radiation. Those uses are well studied, and they aren't treated here.

What's being studied (the jury's still out)

I'm going to be straight with you, My Friends: none of the conditions below are proven or FDA-cleared uses for a chamber like ours. But researchers are actively looking at them, and some of the early results are interesting:

  • Lingering concussion symptoms. Headaches, brain fog and trouble concentrating that hang on for months. This is the most-studied area at our pressure. Some trials showed improvement, but the largest military trial found a sham session worked just as well.

  • PTSD symptoms. Several small studies, mostly in veterans with concussions, reported improvement. They're small, and more research is needed.

  • Fibromyalgia and chronic pain. There are promising early studies, but most used higher pressures than ours.

  • Long COVID fatigue and brain fog. One encouraging trial, done at a higher pressure. It's still early days.

  • Recovery after workouts or injury. Athletes love it. The studies are mixed, so we can't promise faster bounce-back.

Bottom line: if one of these sounds like you, let's talk honestly about whether a trial of sessions makes sense as one part of a bigger plan, not a magic tube.

So why do we offer it?

Plenty of patients find sessions relaxing and restorative, and they like adding them to an overall wellness plan alongside good nutrition, movement, sleep and stress management (my 7 Essentials of Healthy Living). We see it as a support, not a cure. And we'll never tell you it replaces the care you actually need.

Is it safe?

For most healthy adults, yes, though it isn't for everyone. Ear and sinus pressure is the most common complaint (like on an airplane). Check with us first if you have lung disease, ear or sinus problems, a seizure history, claustrophobia, or are pregnant.

Curious? Come see it.
