Numb, Tingling or Burning Feet? What Peripheral Neuropathy Is and Your Drug-Free Options

By Dr. Ronald Vaught | Neuropathy & Nerve Pain | Beyond Health and Wellness, Oak Forest, IL

"My feet feel like they're asleep." "It's like walking on pins and needles." "My feet burn at night and I can't get comfortable."

We hear these every week from patients across Oak Forest and the south suburbs. Many have been told it's just part of getting older, or that there's nothing to do except take a pill that makes them groggy. Neither has to be the end of the story.

What is peripheral neuropathy?

Your peripheral nerves carry signals between your brain and spinal cord and the rest of your body: your feet, legs, hands and fingers. When those nerves are irritated or damaged, the signals get scrambled. The result can be:

  • Numbness, or a "wearing socks" feeling when you're barefoot

  • Tingling, buzzing, or pins and needles

  • Burning, stabbing, or electric-shock pain

  • Feet that are sensitive to sheets or socks

  • Poor balance or feeling unsteady on your feet

  • Symptoms that are often worse at night

Neuropathy usually starts in the toes and feet and can slowly move upward. Some people also notice it in the hands and fingers.

What causes it?

There isn't always one single cause, but common ones include:

  • Diabetes and blood sugar problems. This is the most common cause. Even "pre-diabetes" can affect nerves.

  • Chemotherapy. Certain cancer drugs can damage nerves, and the symptoms may linger long after treatment ends.

  • Vitamin deficiencies, especially B12. Some medications, such as metformin and acid reflux drugs, can lower B12 over time.

  • Thyroid problems, alcohol, and autoimmune or inflammatory conditions.

  • Back problems and nerve compression, where a nerve is pinched further up the line.

  • Unknown cause. Sometimes no clear reason is found. This is called idiopathic neuropathy.

Finding the likely cause matters, because it shapes the plan.

Why "just live with it" isn't the only answer

Neuropathy is often managed with medications that dull nerve signals. They help some people, but others deal with drowsiness, dizziness, or weight gain, or find that the relief fades. Numb feet can also lead to falls and unnoticed injuries, especially for people with diabetes. That makes it worth taking seriously early rather than waiting.

Drug-free options we use at Beyond Health and Wellness

1. Stimpod nerve treatment

The center of our neuropathy program is the Stimpod NMS460, a non-invasive treatment that uses gentle pulses (transcutaneous pulsed radiofrequency) to target the specific nerves connected to your symptoms. It doesn't burn or destroy the nerve. The goal is to calm irritated nerves and support better nerve signaling over time.

What does it feel like? There are no needles, injections, or surgery. Most patients feel a light tapping or tingling, or a small muscle twitch, as we find and treat the nerve. It's painless and comfortable, and the intensity is adjusted to you.

2. Looking for the "why" with functional medicine

Because nerves depend on healthy blood sugar, good nutrient levels and low inflammation, we look at the bigger picture. If you don't know your numbers, or have never had them checked, we can run functional medicine labs (blood sugar, B12 and other nutrients, and inflammation) so we're treating the cause, not just chasing symptoms.

3. Nutrition and targeted supplementation

An anti-inflammatory eating plan and evidence-based supplements for nerve health can support what we do in the office. We'll tell you which ones make sense for you, and which ones aren't worth your money.

4. Movement and balance

Simple exercises to improve circulation, strength and balance help protect you from falls while your nerves recover.

When to see someone

Don't wait if you notice:

  • Numbness or tingling that's spreading or getting worse

  • Burning feet that keep you up at night

  • Trouble with balance, or tripping more often

  • Cuts or sores on your feet you didn't feel (see your doctor promptly, especially if you have diabetes)

The sooner nerves get support, the better the outlook tends to be.

Try Stimpod for free

If you're dealing with numb, tingling or burning feet or hands, we offer a free in-office Stimpod demo and consultation. You'll get to feel the treatment for yourself and ask questions, and we'll tell you honestly whether we think you're a good fit.
