Why Can’t I Lose Weight? 7 Hidden Reasons the Scale Won’t Budge

By Tonia Amaloo, FNP-C | Medical Weight Loss | Beyond Health and Wellness, Oak Forest, IL

You eat less. You move more. You have tried the diets, the apps and the meal plans, and the scale still will not budge. If that sounds familiar, you are not alone, and it is usually not a willpower problem. Very often, something inside your body is working against you.

At Beyond Health and Wellness in Oak Forest, IL, we see this every week in our medical weight loss program. When we look at a patient's labs and health history, we usually find one or more of these seven hidden reasons.

1. Your thyroid is running slow

Your thyroid works like your body's thermostat for metabolism. When it is underactive, your body burns fewer calories, and you may also notice fatigue, feeling cold, dry skin or brain fog. A basic screening test does not always tell the whole story, so we look at a fuller thyroid picture.

2. Insulin resistance and blood sugar swings

When your cells stop responding well to insulin, your body holds on to more fat, especially around the middle. Energy crashes after meals, constant cravings for sweets or carbs, and stubborn belly fat can all point to blood sugar problems.

3. High cortisol from chronic stress

Cortisol is your main stress hormone. When stress never lets up, cortisol stays high, which encourages fat storage around the belly, disrupts sleep and drives cravings. You cannot out-diet a stress response that never turns off.

4. Shifting sex hormones

Changes in estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, during perimenopause, menopause or with age in men, change where your body stores fat and how easily you build and keep muscle. Weight that once came off easily may suddenly stick.

5. Inflammation and gut health

Chronic inflammation and an imbalanced gut can affect your metabolism, your appetite and how you process food. Bloating, irregular digestion and food sensitivities are clues that the gut may be part of the problem.

6. Nutrient deficiencies

Low levels of nutrients such as vitamin D and B12 are common and can leave you tired and low on energy, which makes it harder to stay active and stick with healthy habits.

7. Poor sleep

Short or restless sleep raises hunger hormones and makes cravings harder to resist. It also affects blood sugar and cortisol, so poor sleep can make several of the problems above worse.

How we find out what is really going on

Our Applied Metabolic Reset is a 12-week, lab-guided medical weight loss program. It starts with a consultation and lab work that looks at hormones, thyroid, blood sugar and insulin, inflammation, gut health and key nutrients. From there, I build a personalized plan and meet with you for regular check-ins, adjusting the plan as your body changes. When it fits your health history and goals, peptide therapy may also be part of your plan.

When to get help

If you have been trying for months without results, or if weight gain comes with fatigue, brain fog, poor sleep or constant cravings, it is worth looking deeper. The goal is not a quick fix. It is understanding your body so the results last.
